Free diagnostic grammar workbooks for Internationally Educated Health Professionals who want to identify which grammar patterns they need to develop before investing in a targeted Grammar Essentials module.
Many Internationally Educated Health Professionals have already studied English grammar.
They may know the rules.
They may understand the terminology.
They may even recognize their mistakes after someone points them out.
The more important question is:
Q. Can you recognize the pattern while you are communicating?
The Grammar Essentials Student Quiz Workbooks, by Kim Kara, M.Ed., were created to help answer that question.
Rather than requiring learners to study all of English grammar, the workbooks provide focused opportunities to recognize recurring grammar patterns and determine which Grammar Essentials intensive may be most relevant to their individual needs.
The Grammar Essentials Student Quiz Workbooks are diagnostic self-assessment resources connected to the four-volume Grammar Essentials Series.
Each workbook focuses on one recurring area of healthcare communication:
Nouns & Articles
Verbs & Verbals
Agreement Errors
Advanced Punctuation & Sentence Structure
The workbooks allow learners to explore their own performance before deciding which Grammar Essentials module to study.
They are therefore not designed to replace the full Grammar Essentials resources.
They are designed to help learners determine:
What pattern do I need to learn how to recognize and self-correct?
A common approach to grammar learning is:
Study everything ➡️ memorize the rules ➡️ practice everything
⬇️
hope the mistakes disappear
Grammar Essentials takes a different approach.
The Grammar Essentials Series was developed from recurring communication patterns identified through years of reviewing authentic writing from Internationally Educated Nurses and Internationally Educated Health Professionals preparing for CELBAN.
Those patterns are not necessarily the same for every learner.
One learner may consistently struggle with articles.
Another may understand nouns and verbs but have difficulty recognizing agreement relationships.
Another may use verb forms accurately in some contexts but get confused when verbs act as nouns or adjectives.
Another may know punctuation rules but be unable to recognize the sentence structure that determines which punctuation is appropriate.
The diagnostic workbooks help learners begin by identifying their own pattern.
This workbook focuses on patterns involving:
nouns,
countable and non-countable nouns, and
article selection.
Q. Am I using articles correctly?
If recurring difficulties appear, the corresponding intensive is:
CELBAN Grammar Essentials: Nouns & Articles
This workbook focuses on patterns involving:
verbs,
verb tenses,
verbals,
gerunds,
verb forms functioning as adjectives,
infinitives,
verb chains, and
verb combinations.
A central question is:
Q. What function is this word performing?
If recurring difficulties appear, the corresponding intensive is:
CELBAN Grammar Essentials: Verbs & Verbals
This workbook focuses on grammatical relationships involving:
subject- verb agreement,
singular and plural controlling nouns,
uncountable nouns,
collective nouns,
indefinite pronouns,
gerunds,
agreement phrases,
pronoun–antecedent relationships.
The central question is:
Q. Do these words belong together, and do they agree?
If recurring difficulties appear, the corresponding intensive is:
CELBAN Grammar Essentials: Agreement Errors
This workbook focuses on patterns involving:
sentence structure,
independent clauses,
dependent clauses,
coordinating conjunctions,
subordinating conjunctions,
sentence boundaries,
punctuation decisions.
The central question is:
What kind of sentence have I written?
If recurring difficulties appear, the corresponding intensive is:
CELBAN Grammar Essentials: Advanced Punctuation & Sentence Structure
The purpose of these workbooks is not to determine whether you know every grammar rule in English.
It is to help you recognize which recurring communication patterns may be limiting your accuracy and clarity.
This matters because the Grammar Essentials modules are intentionally designed as individual intensives.
Most learners do not need to study every grammar topic.
A learner at approximately CLB 6, for example, may already have strong control of some grammatical patterns while repeatedly making errors in one or two specific areas.
Studying everything can therefore create unnecessary work.
The better question is:
Q. What pattern have I not yet mastered?
The Student Quiz Workbooks provide a starting point for finding that pattern.
The relationship between the workbooks and the Grammar Essentials modules is intentional:

The workbook is therefore the diagnostic entry point.
The Grammar Essentials module is the targeted intervention.
The Grammar Essentials Series is based on the principle that grammar is organized through patterns.
Learners are encouraged to move beyond asking:
“What grammar rule am I supposed to remember?” ❌
and toward asking:
“What pattern am I seeing?” ✅
Pattern recognition helps learners:
identify grammatical relationships. ✅
recognize recurring sentence structures. ✅
diagnose recurring errors. ✅
develop independent self-correction. ✅
> The goal is not simply to identify the correct answer on a quiz.
The goal is to develop the ability to recognize the same pattern later while writing and speaking (communicating) independently.
The Grammar Essentials Series is unusual in another important way.
The examples are not simply invented to demonstrate grammar rules.
The Grammar Essentials resources were developed from authentic writing submitted by Internationally Educated Nurses and Internationally Educated Health Professionals preparing for CELBAN.
Over many years of reviewing learner writing, recurring communication patterns emerged.
Those patterns became the foundation of the Grammar Essentials resources.
The same principle extends to the examples used throughout the learning materials, including the quizzes and videos.
Learners therefore encounter examples based on communication patterns that real IEHPs have produced.
This creates an important moment of recognition:
“I make this mistake too.”
That recognition is the beginning of learning.
Traditional grammar workbooks often ask learners to practice a large collection of rules.
The Grammar Essentials Student Quiz Workbooks begin somewhere else:
Q. What is the learner actually doing?
The focus is on recognizing recurring patterns rather than simply accumulating more grammar knowledge.
The distinction is important.
A learner may know that:
a verb should agree with its subject. ✅
articles have different functions. ✅
-ing forms can be used in different ways. ✅
commas have various purposes. ✅
Yet knowing those facts does not automatically mean the learner can recognize the relevant pattern while writing.
> The diagnostic workbooks help expose that gap between knowing about grammar and being able to recognize and self-correct grammar in communication.
The Student Quiz Workbooks are designed primarily for:
Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs),
Internationally Educated Health Professionals (IEHPs),
CELBAN candidates,
learners preparing for healthcare communication in English.
They may also be useful to:
CELBAN educators,
healthcare English instructors,
tutors,
language coaches,
educators helping learners identify specific grammar needs.
The Grammar Essentials Student Quiz Workbooks are provided as an accessible way for learners to explore their grammar patterns before purchasing a targeted resource.
Rather than asking learners to buy all four Grammar Essentials modules, the workbooks provide a way to begin with self-assessment and recognition.
You can identify an area that needs attention and then decide whether the corresponding Grammar Essentials intensive is appropriate for you.
This reflects the broader CELBANPrep Compassionate Pricing Policy:
